American Beach, Florida

American beach is a historic African-American community established by Abraham Lincoln Lewis in 1935. Lewis was the chairman of the Board and President of the Pension Bureau of the Afro-American Life Insurance Company.  American Beach is between Summer Beach and Amelia Island Plantation.

American Beach is one of the oldest African-American residential communities and vacation beaches in the United States and the only beach open to African Americans until the late 60's. This popular beach was accessed by people all over the country and is today included on the Florida Black Heritage Trail.

American Beach is located approximately five miles south of Fernandina Beach on Highway A1A. Turn east at the sign for American Beach. Tours of the area can be arranged by calling 904-261-0175.
